At a time when synthesizers were often temperamental, complex and difficult to integrate into musical performance, Pearlman sought to bring greater precision and stability to electronic instrument design. His work helped establish many of the expectations musicians now place upon synthesizers: reliability, flexibility and intuitive control.
As the founder of ARP Instruments, he created some of the most influential synthesizers of the 1970s, including the ARP 2600 and ARP Odyssey. Their sounds would become inseparable from progressive rock, jazz fusion, film scores and electronic music for decades to come.
More importantly, Pearlman demonstrated that electronic instruments could be as dependable as they were expressive.
Before Pearlman
Early synthesizers possessed extraordinary creative potential, but they were not always easy companions.
