By 1988, electronic musicians had an enviable problem. They had choices. Analogue synthesizers had established an entirely new vocabulary of electronic sound. Digital instruments such as the Yamaha DX7 had introduced another. Affordable samplers were placing recordings beneath musicians' fingers, drum machines had become instruments in their own right and MIDI allowed increasingly complicated collections of equipment to communicate.
The electronic studio was becoming extraordinarily powerful. It was also becoming increasingly complicated. A synthesizer made one set of sounds, a sampler provided another, a drum machine handled rhythm, a sequencer remembered the notes and effects processors added space, depth and polish. Connect everything with MIDI, route the audio through a mixer and an entire composition could emerge from a collection of machines. Then Korg asked a different question. What if most of that could be inside one keyboard?
Released in 1988, the Korg M1 didn't simply introduce another way of making sound. Printed on its front panel was a term that described something rather more ambitious: Music Workstation.
It wasn't simply another synthesizer to add to the studio. It proposed that the synthesizer itself could become the place where much of the music was made. The synthesizer was becoming the studio.
Origins
Korg entered the 1980s with a strong history in analogue synthesis, but the market around it was changing rapidly.
The arrival of the Yamaha DX7 in 1983 had transformed expectations. Digital synthesis could be bright, precise and dramatically different from the subtractive analogue instruments that preceded it. Just as importantly, musicians demonstrated an enormous appetite for useful sounds that could be called up instantly.
Sampling was changing expectations too. The Fairlight CMI had demonstrated that recordings could become musical material. E-mu's Emulator series brought sampling into a more familiar keyboard instrument and increasingly sophisticated sample libraries meant musicians could load orchestras, choirs, drums and acoustic instruments from disk.
By the middle of the decade, the question was no longer whether digital technology belonged inside a musical instrument. The question was what else could be put in there.
Korg's answer emerged from a development project led by a team including Junichi Ikeuchi, whose work would help establish a new category of keyboard instrument. The M1 combined a digital sound engine based around sampled waveforms with filters, envelopes and modulation. It added drum sounds, digital effects and an eight-track MIDI sequencer.
Individually, none of these ideas was unprecedented. Together, they changed the proposition. You weren't simply buying another synthesizer. You were buying a system for making music.
Everything in One Place
The M1's sound engine was built around PCM samples stored permanently inside the instrument. Pianos, organs, strings, brass, percussion, guitars, voices, synthetic waveforms and other textures could all become starting points for a patch.
Unlike an Emulator, there was no need to load a floppy disk before playing them. Unlike a sampler, the M1 wasn't asking you to record anything yourself. The sounds were already there.
Korg called the system AI synthesis, short for Advanced Integrated synthesis. The terminology suggested something futuristic, but the underlying idea was refreshingly practical: give musicians useful source sounds, allow those sounds to be shaped and combined, add effects, then give musicians somewhere to record the resulting performance.
The M1 included an eight-track sequencer capable of controlling its internal sounds and external MIDI equipment. A built-in collection of drum sounds provided rhythm, while digital effects including reverb, delay and chorus could give the sounds a finished quality without requiring external processors.
A musician could sit in front of a single mass-market keyboard and imagine completing much of a piece of music without leaving it. This was what Music Workstation meant. Not another oscillator or another modulation source, but the integration of processes that had previously occupied separate machines.
When the Preset Became the Instrument
There is another reason the M1 became so important. Its sounds travelled.
Electronic musicians have always had a complicated relationship with presets. There is an enduring idea that a serious synthesist should construct sounds from scratch, as though choosing a factory patch somehow represents a failure of imagination.
The M1 provides a useful challenge to that assumption because sometimes a preset becomes an instrument in its own right.
The most famous example is the M1 piano. By modern standards, it isn't an especially realistic reproduction of an acoustic piano. The available sample memory was tiny compared with contemporary software libraries capable of storing many gigabytes of recordings.
But realism wasn't what history ultimately asked of it.
The M1 piano was bright, immediate and able to cut through a mix. Its character made it extraordinarily effective in dance music, particularly house. Once musicians began using it, the sound acquired meaning beyond the instrument that produced it.
Eventually, selecting the M1 piano wasn't necessarily an attempt to imitate a piano. It was a decision to use the M1 piano.
A technological approximation had become a musical voice.
House Keys
Few factory sounds have become as closely associated with a musical culture as the M1's piano and organ patches.
House music had already developed around drum machines, synthesizers, samplers and records being recombined into new forms. The M1 arrived with sounds that fitted remarkably well into that environment. Its piano had the attack needed to survive alongside kick drums and percussion, while chords could be stabbed rhythmically rather than played like a conventional piano performance, turning an acoustic instrument sample into something almost percussive.
The famous Organ 2 patch underwent a similar transformation. In isolation, it was simply another factory sound. In the hands of house producers, it became vocabulary.
This is one of electronic music's recurring tricks. A manufacturer designs a sound for one purpose and a community hears something else. The sound travels from record to record until its origin becomes almost irrelevant. Eventually musicians begin reaching for it not because of what it imitates, but because of what previous musicians did with it.
The M1 didn't invent house music. House music helped invent what the M1 meant.
A Universe in a Keyboard
Not every M1 preset attempted to reproduce an acoustic instrument. Some demonstrated another possibility entirely.
The famous Universe patch layered evolving digital textures into a large, atmospheric sound that seemed designed to announce the arrival of the future. It became instantly recognisable, but it also reveals something important about the changing relationship between musicians and synthesizers.
On an early modular system, creating a complex sound required building it. Oscillators were selected, filters adjusted, envelopes shaped and modulation routed. The musician constructed something complex from relatively simple ingredients.
The M1 could present something elaborate immediately. Press a key and there it was: a finished sonic environment.
That did not remove creativity. It moved it. The question was becoming less "How do I make this sound?" and increasingly "What can I make with this sound?"
For some musicians that distinction was liberating. The synthesizer could disappear slightly into the background and allow composition to move forward. Creative ideas disappear quickly, and sometimes the shortest distance between hearing one and recording it matters more than understanding how every component of the sound was constructed.
The Fairlight Idea, Reconsidered
There is an interesting comparison between the M1 and the Fairlight CMI.
A decade earlier, the Fairlight had proposed an extraordinary vision of computer-based music production built around sampling, sequencing, digital sound manipulation and an integrated environment in which a musician could construct increasingly complete pieces of music.
It was revolutionary. It was also spectacularly expensive.
The M1 was not a Fairlight made cheap. The technologies, interfaces and ambitions were different, but something of the philosophy had travelled: the idea that electronic musicians might want more than a synthesizer. They might want an environment.
By 1988, advances in digital technology meant a version of that idea could sit inside a keyboard sold to working musicians around the world. The studio hadn't disappeared, but some of the things previously scattered around it had begun migrating into the instrument.
The Sound of Convenience
Convenience can sound like a criticism.
In discussions about electronic instruments, complexity is often confused with seriousness. A machine that demands expertise can appear more legitimate than one designed to produce useful results immediately.
The M1 challenged that distinction. Its success was partly built on convenience. Turn it on and useful sounds were waiting. Piano, strings, drums and effects were already inside, along with a sequencer capable of assembling them into music.
This didn't mean every musician made the same music. It meant more of the technical distance between an idea and a recording had been removed. There is something quite radical about that.
Earlier electronic musicians frequently assembled studios from separate technologies because no single machine could provide everything they needed. The M1 proposed that integration itself could be an instrument feature. Not another oscillator or modulation source, but a workflow.
The Workstation Takes Over
The success of the M1 helped establish the music workstation as one of the dominant electronic instrument formats of the following decades. Korg continued developing the idea through later instruments, while Roland, Yamaha and other manufacturers built their own increasingly sophisticated workstations.
More sounds, more tracks, more effects and more memory followed. Displays grew larger and eventually audio recording itself joined the list. The workstation became an electronic studio compressed into a keyboard.
For professional musicians, composers and performers, the appeal was obvious. One instrument could cover enormous amounts of musical territory. For home musicians, it offered something equally important: access to sounds and production capabilities that previously required a room full of equipment.
There was a trade-off. As instruments contained more possibilities, their identities became less singular. A Minimoog is unmistakably a Minimoog. A TR-808 is unmistakably a TR-808. The M1 was designed to be many things.
And yet, curiously, some of its imperfections ensured that it developed an unmistakable identity anyway. The piano. The organ. The choirs. Universe.
Attempts to provide musicians with a broad palette produced individual sounds that became more famous than anyone could have anticipated. The instrument designed to contain everything became remembered for a handful of things that sounded unmistakably like itself.
Legacy
The Korg M1 became enormously successful and helped establish a template that remains familiar today.
A modern workstation may be vastly more powerful. A laptop running software instruments can contain orchestras, synthesizers, drum machines, samplers, effects and sequencing environments whose capabilities would have been almost unimaginable in 1988.
But the proposition is recognisable: give the musician the sounds, give them the tools, give them somewhere to assemble the music, then get out of the way.
The M1 also occupies an important place in the history of the preset. Its most famous sounds remind us that originality doesn't necessarily begin with creating a sound nobody has heard before. Sometimes it begins with hearing something familiar differently.
A sampled piano becomes a house instrument. An organ preset becomes a rhythmic device. A factory combination patch becomes the beginning of an entirely different composition.
The technology provides the vocabulary. Musicians decide what to say with it.
The M1 arrived at a moment when electronic studios were becoming increasingly capable and increasingly complicated. Korg's response was not simply to build another machine for musicians to add to the pile.
It put more of the pile inside the machine.
The synthesizer had become the studio.
