In 1979, two Australians proposed a remarkable idea.

What if any sound in the world could become a musical instrument?

At the time, electronic instruments were primarily concerned with creating sounds. Oscillators generated tones, filters shaped frequencies and sequencers controlled patterns. Peter Vogel and Kim Ryrie imagined something altogether different.

Their creation would become the Fairlight Computer Musical Instrument (CMI), one of the most influential electronic instruments ever produced. More importantly, it fundamentally changed how musicians thought about sound itself.

The consequences of that idea continue to shape music today.

 

Before Vogel & Ryrie

By the late 1970s, electronic music was evolving rapidly.

Analogue synthesizers had become increasingly sophisticated, while early digital technologies were beginning to emerge in laboratories and research institutions. Yet computers remained prohibitively expensive and largely absent from musical performance.

Sampling, as we understand it today, did not yet exist.

Electronic instruments could imitate sounds, generate entirely new ones or manipulate recordings, but the idea that virtually any sound could become playable, editable and performable remained extraordinary.

Peter Vogel, an engineer with a deep interest in digital technologies, and Kim Ryrie, a musician and entrepreneur, saw possibilities where others saw limitations.

Together, they asked an entirely new question.

 

A Different Philosophy

Throughout their work on the Fairlight CMI, Vogel and Ryrie pursued a deceptively simple idea:

Anything can become music.

This philosophy represented a profound departure from contemporary synthesizer design.

The Fairlight was not attempting to become a better analogue synthesizer. Nor was it seeking to imitate traditional instruments more convincingly than its competitors.

Instead, it proposed that sound itself could become musical material.

A voice.

A piano note.

A piece of machinery.

A field recording.

Anything that could be captured could potentially become an instrument.

Today this idea feels entirely natural. In 1979, it was revolutionary.

 

The Work

Released in 1979, the Fairlight CMI combined digital sampling, sequencing and computer-based sound manipulation within a single instrument.

Its now-famous light pen interface allowed musicians to interact directly with waveforms displayed on screen, while its Page R sequencer would become one of the most influential approaches to computer-based composition ever created.

Although prohibitively expensive for many musicians, the Fairlight found its way into some of the world's most prestigious studios.

Its influence quickly spread throughout popular music during the 1980s, shaping everything from film scores and synth-pop to experimental electronic music.

The Fairlight did more than introduce new sounds.

It introduced entirely new ways of thinking about composition itself.

 

Beyond the Instruments

Perhaps Peter Vogel and Kim Ryrie's greatest contribution extends beyond sampling altogether.

The Fairlight represented a philosophical shift in electronic music.

Before the Fairlight, instruments largely generated sound.

After the Fairlight, they increasingly processed, manipulated and organised information.

This distinction remains enormously significant.

Modern musicians routinely work with audio as data—recording, editing, sequencing and transforming sounds in ways that would have seemed unimaginable only a few decades earlier.

In many respects, the modern digital studio remains indebted to the questions Vogel and Ryrie first asked in Sydney during the late 1970s.

 

Legacy

Peter Vogel and Kim Ryrie occupy a unique place within electronic music history.

Unlike many of their contemporaries, they were not attempting to refine existing approaches to synthesis or performance. They were imagining an entirely different future for musical instruments.

Their influence extends far beyond the Fairlight itself.

Every software sampler, digital audio workstation, field recorder and sample library owes something to the idea they helped establish—that sound can be captured, manipulated and transformed into something entirely new.

Today, musicians carry technologies in their pockets that would have astonished the Fairlight's creators.

Yet we remain remarkably faithful to their original question.
